Celebrating VE Day 80 and street party traditions with The Big Lunch
Communities across the UK are invited to come together to honour the vibrant heritage of street parties as part of VE Day 80 celebrations on Monday 5 May 2025 with The Big Lunch providing all the guidance and tips needed to feel part of the celebrations.
Taking part in VE Day 80 is a chance to share a moment in history together. As the nation reflects on this significant moment bringing peace 80 years ago, The Big Lunch is proud to support people everywhere to connect, share food, and feed community spirit.
The Big Lunch has become a firm fixture in the national calendar, underpinning some of the most cherished moments in recent history. It brought millions of people together for HM Queen Elizabeth’s Big Jubilee Lunch in 2022, and again for The Coronation Big Lunch for TM King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023. These joyful, inclusive events celebrate community connection so that people of all ages can make lasting memories.
Building on the enduring legacy and creating more opportunities for community celebration, The Big Lunch is now inviting people to host Big Lunches to share friendship, food and fun over the weekend of 7 – 8 June 2025. Whether it’s a full-blown street party, a garden picnic, or a simple gathering over tea and cake, The Big Lunch is all about bringing people together.
Lindsey Brummitt, Programme Director at Eden Project, the charity behind The Big Lunch, said: “Street parties and shared meals have long played a role in uniting people during national moments of joy and reflection. VE Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of community and sharing a Big Lunch together is a great way to take part – to reflect, to celebrate, and to connect. We’re delighted to see communities coming together this May, and to build on the community connections made, we’re inviting everyone to join in on the official Big Lunch weekend on 7-8 June to keep feeding community spirit where you live!
