Join Durham University’s Global Week celebrations

Durham University’s Global Week takes place from March 1 offering a packed programme of events, exhibitions, talks and performances.

The theme for Global Week is ‘Culture – Community – Connect’ and the University warmly invites everyone to join in the celebrations.

The programme includes over 80 events taking place in Durham and across the world at Durham Days alumni celebrations.

This week-long celebration recognises the University’s diverse international student and staff communities, and the positive global impact of Durham’s research and partnerships.

It showcases Durham University’s diversity and global connections through a series of events focused on research, languages, culture and global citizenship.

Global Week launches on Saturday 1 March with the Global Goals Summit.

This signature event, hosted at Stephenson College in Durham, brings together sixth form pupils from local schools and colleges, along with students from the University’s International Study Centre to explore solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Activities taking place throughout the week include in-person and on-line lectures open to everyone, as well as panel discussions, film screenings, concerts and family friendly events.

On Sunday 2 March, Durham Students’ Union hosts WorldFest, a celebration of the diverse range of cultures represented within Durham’s student community and organised by Durham International Students Association.

Members of the local community are invited along to this festival style event, where over 25 different international student societies will share their culture and traditions through food stalls, music, dance performances and cultural exhibits.

Durham University students will also showcase their talents throughout the week with an international photography competition and exhibition.

These events encourage students to share their experiences and learn from each other, across the many different nationalities that Durham University welcomes.

Meanwhile, academic conversations will take place at a series of lectures and panel discussions throughout the week, addressing critical issues like sustainability and inequality.

Durham University Business School is also hosting an open event on Wednesday 5 March focussing on Caring Organisations: Practice, Politics, and Potential.

The Keynote Address will be by Rt Hon Professor Mark Drakeford MS, Former First Minister of Wales and Current Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language

Global Week will also incorporate the University’s celebrations of International Women’s Day, on Saturday 8 March.

This will include a panel discussion for female staff and students, featuring four of the University’s senior female leaders: Vice-Chancellor Professor Karen O’Brien, Academic Registrar Monika Nangia, Grey College Principal Sonia Virdee, and University Secretary Amanda Wilcox.

Claire O’Malley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global) of Durham University, said: “Global Week allows us the opportunity to recognise and highlight the many international strengths of Durham University.

“With students and staff from over 120 countries, our diversity is one of our greatest assets.

“I encourage all members of the Durham community to take part in this wonderful celebration of our global community.”

The week culminates in the annual Durham Global Awards ceremony, honouring outstanding contributions related to the University’s internationalisation efforts.

Global Week runs from March 1 to March 9 and the full schedule of events is available on the University’s website at: https://www.durham.ac.uk/global-durham/durham-global-week/events/
