You can come along to the Hereford Museum Resource and Learning Centre (MRLC) to see the Herefordshire Hoard.
The Herefordshire Hoard is a collection of treasures dating back to the Anglo-Saxon and Viking eras. It was buried in a field near Leominster in the 9th century and unearthed in 2021 by a rather unscrupulous group who tried to sell off parts of it – you can read more about the discovery here.
The Herefordshire Hoard includes 29 silver coins, a silver ingot, a beast’s head gold bracelet, a gold ring and a rock crystal pendant.
Deemed to be a historical treasure of national importance, the Hoard was kept for some time in the British Museum. That was until a group of dedicated people decided to fight for the Hoard to be returned to Herefordshire! They worked tirelessly, with events and talks across the county, in a bid to raise the funds needed to bring the Herefordshire Hoard home. Thankfully, their efforts paid off. The Herefordshire Hoard is now housed in the Hereford Museum Resource and Learning Centre (MRLC) on Friars Street for all to enjoy.
The MRLC houses a huge collection of other historical treasures too, including costumes, art, and much more. The MRLC offers behind-the-scenes tours and educational sessions too! The MLRC is part of Hereford Museums – you can see some of their other historical artifacts at the museum and art gallery on Broad Street, and the Black and White House Museum in the centre of Hereford.
Due to an exciting major redevelopment, Hereford Museum and Library on Broad Street will close in spring 2023. Doors to the refurbished museum will reopen in summer 2025. Read all about it here.
