Hereford Cathedral

There are loads of family-friendly activities at Hereford Cathedral, including the free children’s app Rapscallion’s Revenge, free toddler group on Monday mornings in term time, free Lego Club for 8 to 14-year-olds once a month, and family fun activities during the holidays.

You can even try our amazing Escape Room  – check our events pages on our website for dates and to book – if you dare!  We also hold exhibitions – more details on any current exhibitions are at the bottom of this page!

Hereford Cathedral is delighted to be able to re-introduce Tower Tours for the first time since 2019, after a two-year break due to Covid precautions.

Adventurous visitors can climb the tower’s 218 steps for some of the finest views of the city, Herefordshire and beyond. Tours include a visit to the Lantern Gallery, and the bell-ringing chamber, with a set of panoramic interpretation boards to help understand the views from the very top.  Certificates are issued to all who manage the climb!

Climbing the Cathedral’s tower for some of the finest views of the city and surrounding countryside is one of its most popular visitor attractions, and tours run on Wednesdays and Saturdays from April to September. Please check the Cathedral website for details and dates.

Tours cost £6 for adults, £5 for students and £3 for children under 16, and can be purchased on the day from the Cathedral Shop. Tours may not take place if the weather is poor, and may not be suitable for all visitors; children must be accompanied by an adult and we recommend that only children aged 8 or above attempt the climb.

Graham Bennett, head of the Tower Tour Guides, is delighted: “I find it a privilege and a pleasure to be a tower guide at Hereford Cathedral.  It is a privilege to have access to some of the hidden recesses of the Cathedral, and a pleasure to show them to visitors.  We get to see how parts of the Cathedral were built and, as well as the views from the top over the city and into four counties, we have stunning views of the interior of the Cathedral on our way up.”

If you are interested in booking a private Tower Tour for a group, please contact or call 01432 374 202.

Cathedral: City: County. When: Monday 1 May – Saturday 30 September 2023, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm

The cathedral stands tall within its Close, bounded by railings – but it is not and never has been separate from the surrounding city and county. This exhibition uses items from across the archive collections to show the many and varied links that the cathedral has had with those who lived and worked both within and beyond its walls. This exhibition is on display in the Mappa Mundi & Chained Library Exhibition
