Sweet and Sour Chicken

This Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe is crispy, tangy and packed with flavour!

Ingredients

For the Chicken:
  • 2 chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • Oil for frying
For the Sweet & Sour Sauce:
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water
  • ½ cup pineapple juice (or water)
  • ½ cup diced pineapple (optional)
  • ½ cup bell peppers, chopped (any colour)
  • ½ cup onion, chopped

Method

1. Prepare the Chicken:
  1. In a bowl, mix cornstarch, flour, salt, black pepper and garlic powder.
  2. In another bowl, whisk egg, water and soy sauce.
  3. Dip chicken pieces into the wet mixture, then coat in the dry flour mixture.
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan (350°F/175°C) and fry the chicken until golden and crispy (about 4–5 minutes). Drain on paper towels.
2. Make the Sauce:
  1. In a pan, mix ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, soy sauce and pineapple juice. Bring to a simmer.
  2. Add bell peppers, onion and pineapple. Cook for 2–3 minutes.
  3. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce thickens.
3. Combine & Serve:
  1. Add the crispy chicken to the sauce, toss to coat evenly.
  2. Serve hot over steamed rice or with noodles. Enjoy!
