Where to get your locally grown Christmas Tree
The great Christmas tree debate: real or fake?
The Christmas tree is often one of the first signs that Christmas is really on its way! But before you start arguing over which tree has the perfect shape, thereβs another decision to make β real or artificial?
Both have their advantages, so here are a few things to consider before choosing the tree thatβs right for your family.
π The real deal β real Christmas trees
Tradition and charm: Thereβs something rather special about choosing a real Christmas tree, bringing it home and filling the house with that lovely festive pine scent. No two trees are exactly the same, either!
A more natural choice: Real Christmas trees are grown as a crop and absorb carbon as they grow. Choosing a locally grown or UK-grown tree can also help reduce the emissions associated with transporting it. The RHS recommends looking for a locally sourced and grown tree where possible.
But they do need a little care: A real tree needs watering regularly to help it stay fresh and reduce needle drop. Keep it away from radiators and other heat sources and check the water level daily.
And when Christmas is over, don’t simply put it in the bin. Real trees can be chipped, composted or recycled through local Christmas tree collection schemes.
π The convenient choice β artificial Christmas trees
Use it year after year: The big advantage of an artificial tree is that you can pack it away at the end of Christmas and bring it out again next year. If you already own one, continuing to use it for as many years as possible is generally a better environmental choice than replacing it.
Less mess and maintenance: No watering, fewer fallen needles and no need to find somewhere to dispose of it in January!
A tree for every style: Artificial trees come in all shapes, sizes and colours, with everything from traditional green trees to pre-lit and snowy styles.
From an environmental point of view, however, artificial trees are generally made from plastic and other materials that can be difficult to recycle. Their environmental impact is therefore spread over the number of years they are used. The Carbon Trust suggests that an artificial tree needs to be reused for several years before its impact compares favourably with buying a new real tree each year.
So, which should you choose?
Ultimately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. If you already have an artificial tree, keep using it for as long as you can. If you’re buying a new tree, a locally grown real tree is a lovely option β particularly if you can buy it directly from a local grower.
And, of course, there’s the added bonus of making choosing your Christmas tree a family outing! π

π² Looking for a locally grown tree?
If buying locally is important to you, don’t be afraid to ask where your tree was grown. A tree being sold by a local business doesn’t necessarily mean that it was grown locally.
The RHS recommends choosing a locally sourced and grown tree, or at least one that has been grown in the UK rather than imported.
Buying directly from a local grower is also a lovely way to support local businesses while starting a new family Christmas tradition.
π Don’t forget to recycle your tree!
Once the decorations are down and Christmas is over, give your real tree a second life if you can. Real Christmas trees can be chipped for mulch, composted or put to other uses in the garden.
KEMP Hospice has also run its annual Christmas Tree Collection across selected postcodes around Kidderminster, Bewdley, Stourport and Hagley, raising funds for the hospice while giving real trees a useful afterlife. Keep an eye out for details of the 2027 collection after Christmas.
I’ll be updating this article again in November 2026, when more local Christmas tree farms have confirmed their opening dates, prices and arrangements.
