Kayaking in Kinver – A Family Adventure for All Ages!

Last week we went on our annual adventure with River Severn Canoes – and this year we brought my Mom along too! At over 70, she’s usually more of a supporter from the sidelines, but we thought it was time she had a go. And she loved it!

As always, Lily and I had a brilliant time, along with my sister and nephews. We’ve been a few times now – sometimes in the cold and drizzle, sometimes in glorious sunshine (last week was definitely the latter!) – and every time it’s been a hit. With all the different ages in our family, it can be tricky finding something we all enjoy, but kayaking really does suit everyone.

Once you’re settled in the boat, it’s surprisingly relaxing. Instead of walking along the river or canal, you’re gently paddling, taking in the scenery, chatting, and laughing together. Mom said she found it far easier than she expected – and I think that’s down to the excellent staff. They’re so helpful, explaining exactly what to do, holding the boat steady, and making sure getting in and out is stress-free. That little bit of support really builds confidence, especially for first-timers.

Of course, one of the highlights is spotting wildlife. We had a family of ducklings swimming alongside us for part of the trip, which was magical. We were also told that herons and even a kingfisher had been seen the day before – so there’s always something to look out for.

River Severn Canoes make the whole experience easy and fun. Booking is simple, the team are welcoming, and the atmosphere is always friendly. It’s the sort of activity that could become a regular hobby, a much-loved annual tradition, or that go-to family outing when you’ve got a mix of ages to keep happy (suitable from 5+).

Next year, we’re tempted to try one of their longer trips on the River Severn – the one where you paddle downstream and return on the Severn Valley Railway steam train. Doesn’t that sound amazing? If you’ve done it already, I’d love to hear about your experience. We’re always on the lookout for ‘Roving Reporter’ reviews for our magazine and website, so why not send yours in (with or without photos) and see yourself in the next issue of Raring2go!
