County Durham’s Parks and Countryside

Outdoor adventure awaits you at every one of our parks, nature reserves, picnic areas and railway paths!

The hidden gem of Durham City!

Located on the hillside just north of the city centre, Wharton Park offers commanding views of Durham Cathedral and the wider area. Stroll through the historic parkland, take in nature, and explore our sculptures and community garden. For children with a sense of adventure, there are also two play areas and a multi-use games area.

A warm welcome awaits visitors in the Heritage Centre where you can enjoy a drink or light lunch, learn about the history of the park, and discover the range of events and activities on offer throughout the year.

Step into our exciting, augmented reality world with the Love Exploring app!

There’s a T-Rex in our parks! He’s big and bold and likes meat, but don’t worry he’s only augmented reality! Download the love exploring app for free to find him and his dino friends on your walk around Wharton Park.

With other seasonal themes including woodland fairies, space, mega minibeasts, and our Halloween dance trail, downloading Love Exploring is a must for any young adventurer!
