Explore this unique garden in Durham
Durham University’s 10 hectare Botanic Garden is set amongst beautiful mature woodlands on the southern outskirts of Durham city.
Open to the public, the Botanic Garden offers a wide variety of landscapes to explore and discover, with guests young and old visiting throughout the year. Wander through the alpine garden, winter garden, bamboo grove, glass houses and our recently developed woodland garden and wild flower meadow.
Explore this unique garden and discover something new around each corner over the changing seasons. Our visitor centre is open daily, for you to treat yourself to something refreshing in the coffee shop and visit the gift shop.
Activities for all ages
We offer several self-guided activities and trails for children of a range of ages. All the activity sheets are available at the Visitor Centre or can be downloaded HERE
As well as being a beautiful natural environment in which to wander, explore and learn more about our plants, the Botanic Garden hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year. All of these activities are free, with only standard admission charges applying.
Family Events
We welcome guests of all ages to come along and get involved in the events we offer. Many of these are inspired by the natural setting of the garden, but with activities ranging from face painting to storytelling, there really is something for everyone!
Throughout the year we run family activities suitable for children. For adults, the Garden and Visitor Centre regularly play host to exhibitions of art and photography.
