Northern Lights Leicester shares map and installation first look
Leicester’s newest festive attraction, the immersive celestial light trail Northern Lights, has shared the official map for its Abbey Park debut this winter and an exciting preview of the magical installations displayed within.
Approximately one kilometre in length, the light trail will host 11 distinct illuminated realms along the way, with a curated selection of vintage fairground rides & a wide variety of classic festive treats, including mulled wine, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows on hand to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. In addition to the trail, guests will be able to explore the magical Christmas Village, which will feature an extensive range of delicious food and drink offerings celebrating the very best of Leicestershire’s artisan street food vendors and bars.

Northern Lights Leicester has revealed the first previews of what to expect from the illuminations along the trail. Lumen Grove, the opening encounter of Northern Lights Leicester transforms the lawns of Abbey Park into field of scattered stars as over 100 bespoke digital sabre lights sparkle in choreographed synchronicity gradually charting a course for the fallen North Star and setting the theme for Northern Lights Leicester’s inaugural event.
Elsewhere, Meteor Crossing will celebrate Abbey Park’s striking architecture with a breathtaking animation of shooting stars projected onto the contours of the park’s iconic vaulted bridge whilst the River Soar flows underneath and mirrors the whole spectacle for twice the stellar experience. Following a brief pause in the trail for roasting marshmallows, you will soon encounter Twinkle, Twinkle, a playful and interactive installation powered by music and guest participation.
Whilst many of the installations throughout the trail are produced by leading digital design firms from all over the world, Starlit Avenue is a delicate tree-lined lane adorned with beautifully handcrafted paper stars that offers a moment of reflection and respite from the hustle and bustle of winter festivities. Sea of Stars will serve as the breathtaking finale, culminating the trail with an entirely new and captivating piece.

Following sellout success in Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds; Northern Lights will illuminate Leicester for the very first time and is expected to attract over 70,000 visitors to Abbey Park. Set in the grounds of the medieval St. Mary’s Abbey and the landmark ruins of Cavendish House, Northern Lights Leicester will lead visitors on a jaw-dropping magical journey through a celestial spectrum of light installations & unique musical compositions.
Running for the duration of the festive period, from November 18th to December 31st, the breathtaking experience will allow visitors to appreciate the already beloved surroundings of the park in a magical new light. Visitors can expect a showcase of exclusive art installations, special effects and interactive elements from a high calibre of local, national and global talent with plenty of festive photo moments along the route.
Northern Lights Leicester is the latest event and fifth festive light trail by award-winning event producers From The Fields, the team behind the acclaimed light trails at Cardiff’s Christmas at Bute Park, Northern Lights Newcastle at Leazes Park, Northern Lights Manchester in Heaton Park and Northern Lights Leeds at Temple Newsam plus the multi-award-winning ‘Glastonbury of the North’ Kendal Calling, which just celebrated its 21st sold-out year.
