Tell us about the business
Kumon Sale Study Centre provides individualised Maths and English study programmes for children of all ages and abilities, from early learners taking their first steps in reading and numbers through to secondary school students working at advanced levels.
What makes Kumon special is that every child works at their own just-right level, rather than simply following their school year. Through a little study each day, we help children build strong academic foundations alongside confidence, concentration, independence and a genuine “I can do this” attitude towards learning.
What’s your role there, and what does a typical day look like?
I’m the Instructor/Teacher, but my role goes far beyond teaching during class. I carefully monitor each student’s progress, plan their individual study programme and decide when they are ready for their next challenge.
A typical day involves reviewing students’ work and progress, planning their next steps, communicating with parents and, of course, welcoming lots of children into the centre!
During class, my team and I guide students without simply giving them the answers. One of our biggest aims is to help children develop the confidence to think, try, learn from mistakes and eventually work things out independently.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Without question, watching children grow – not only academically, but as learners. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing a child who once said, “I can’t do this,” gradually become someone who is confident enough to tackle a challenge independently.
I love celebrating those little breakthroughs as much as the big achievements. Seeing our students develop strong Maths and English skills, confidence, perseverance and independence is what makes this job so special to me.
What’s one thing people might not know about the business?
People are often surprised to learn that Kumon isn’t tutoring in the traditional sense. We don’t simply help children with tonight’s homework or teach only what they are currently covering at school. Our aim is much bigger and longer-term: to develop independent learners with such strong foundations that they can eventually study material beyond their school year.
Some of our students work one, two or even three years ahead of their school level. The real achievement, however, is not just being “ahead” – it is developing the skills and confidence to learn independently.
What’s coming up that you’re excited about?
September is always an exciting time for us, and this year even more so with our Free Registration offer running throughout September and into October. We’re really looking forward to welcoming lots of new students and families into our Kumon family and helping them begin their own learning journeys.
Our current students have also worked incredibly hard throughout the summer, staying consistent even during the holidays. In November, we’ll celebrate their progress and achievements at our annual Advanced Student Honour Roll (ASHR) Ceremony – one of my favourite events of the year. It’s a wonderful opportunity to recognise not only how far they have progressed academically, but also the dedication, perseverance and independence they’ve developed along the way.
Where’s your favourite place to chill out in the area when you’re not working?
When I get a little time to myself, I love going to Gail’s or Blanchflower in Sale for a coffee and something nice to eat. They’re both lovely local spots to relax, catch up with friends and switch off for a little while – although, being in Sale, I quite often bump into one of my Kumon families! 😊
Any other fun facts you’d like to share or comments to add?
Kumon Sale has been part of the local community since 2012, and one of the loveliest parts of my job is seeing families grow with us. I’ve watched little learners become confident teenagers, tackling advanced Maths and English and even completing the Kumon programmes. And the next generation is never far away!
When one of our Kumon mums is expecting, I always joke that there’s **another future Kumon student on the way!** A few years later, there they are at three or four, ready to start their own Kumon journey. 😊 After all these years, seeing our students reach new milestones – and having siblings grow up with us too – still makes me just as excited and proud.
