Review- The Karate Kid The Musical

I absolutely loved the original film and couldn’t wait to see this show and how they would adapt this 80’s classic on to the stage… And WOW we wasn’t disappointed as it was AMAZING!

The cast, the songs, the staging were all fabulous and we were hooked from the opening scene as the story played out with humour, love and determination.

Adrian Pang brought Mr Miyagi to life on stage with humour, resolution and tenderness, we adored his character and everyone would want him in your corner.

Gino Ochello truly encapsulated Daniel LaRusso, his vulnerability, his growth, his trials and tribulations of being a teenager and the new kid in town.

Abigail Amin as Ali Mills acted the popular rich girl that all the boys want to date and she showed us that there was more to her than just her family’s wealth and connections.

Sharon Sexton acted Mrs LaRusso with witty New Jersey sass but also showed the other side to her out going character, the side that was a bit scared about what happens next when she makes such a big move to a new town.

Joe Simmons superbly acted as Daniels arch enemy Johnny Lawrence with incredible physicality,  fantastic dance routines and a real depth of character.

Matt Mills is the ultimate sensai as John Kreese head of Cobra Kai. His mantra is ‘Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy has made his Dojo the best in the city. His army background has given him the skills and determination to succeed but it;s at all costs and that’s not karate.

This show is supported by a superb assemble who’s dancing, singing and stage movement is sensational. There were so many songs that were all toe tapping and catchy but my favourite was ”If I could take his Pain away” sung by Mrs LaRusso, it was beautifully  delivered and so emotional.

Congratulations to everyone at The Alex for delivering another excellent show.
