Jumping in Muddy Puddles! Family Walks & Outdoor Adventures Near Kidderminster & Stourbridge

Kids Happily Jumping In Muddy Puddles

Who says family adventures have to stop when summer ends? Autumn leaves, muddy puddles, frosty woodland walks and festive trails all offer reasons to wrap up warm and get outdoors.

From seasonal trails and magical gardens to woodland adventures and wide-open parkland, there are plenty of places for families to explore around Kidderminster and Stourbridge throughout autumn and winter. Some attractions put on special Halloween and Christmas trails at different times of year, while others are just as lovely for a simple family walk once the decorations have gone.

Bodenham Arboretum and The World Outside Forest School

Bodenham Arboretum, near Kidderminster, is a lovely spot for a family wander, with more than five miles of walks through woodland, around pools and past plantations, dells and glades. There’s plenty to discover as the seasons change, from colourful autumn leaves to the quieter beauty of winter.

The arboretum also runs seasonal trails and family events at different times of year, so there will be something extra to look out for during school holidays. It’s worth checking what’s on before you visit.

Find out more at Bodenham Arboretum.

For children who love learning and exploring outdoors, look out for activities from The World Outside, too. The World Outside Forest School runs Forest Fridays during term time for pre-schoolers, plus school holiday sessions for children of all ages. A lovely way to enjoy nature and learn through outdoor play.

Arley Arboretum

Arley Arboretum, near Bewdley, is a beautiful place for a family walk, with winding paths, trees to admire and plenty of space to explore. It’s especially colourful in autumn, but the changing seasons give families a reason to return throughout the year.

At certain times of year, the arboretum also hosts themed trails and family events. Its Boogie Bones Discovery Trail is one to look out for around Halloween, with other seasonal activities appearing at different points in the calendar.

Planning a winter visit? Arley Arboretum closes during January and February for winter maintenance, so make the most of a visit before its seasonal closure.

Visit the Arley Arboretum website to check opening dates and upcoming events.

Habberley Trail

If your children like to climb, explore and burn off some energy, Habberley Trail near Kidderminster offers an outdoor adventure with plenty to keep them busy. Expect woodland surroundings, play areas and activities that make a walk feel more like an expedition.

It can be muddy underfoot, especially after rain, so wellies or sturdy footwear are a good idea. It’s a place for embracing the outdoors rather than worrying about keeping everyone spotless!

Raring2go! readers can also take advantage of our 10% discount offer. Check the offer details before booking.

Whitlenge Gardens

Whitlenge Gardens in Hartlebury is a lovely choice for little explorers who enjoy spotting details along the way. Look out for fairy doors, themed garden areas and magical corners, including Fairy Glen and Hobbiton.

The gardens often have themed trails and activities during school holidays, so there may be something special to discover around Halloween or Christmas. Outside those events, families can still enjoy exploring the gardens together.

Whitlenge remains open during the winter months, although the gardens close earlier and the paths are not lit, so an earlier visit is best.

Visit Whitlenge Gardens for opening times and seasonal activities.

With its sweeping parkland, lake, woodland and children’s play area, Himley Hall & Park is a good option for a family outing in any season. Bring a ball, look out for wildlife or simply enjoy a walk and a run around in the fresh air.

The park also hosts family events and seasonal trails at various times of year. These change with the calendar, so check the events listings if you’re hoping to catch something themed.

The park is open daily from 7.30am until dusk, making it a useful option for a winter walk too. Remember that individual events or facilities may have different arrangements.

Wyre Forest – woodland walks and nature spotting

For a proper woodland adventure, head to Wyre Forest, where you’ll find a choice of walking routes and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, collect fallen leaves and enjoy the changing scenery.

Choose a shorter route for little legs or make more of a day of it with a longer walk. The forest is a lovely place to visit throughout the year, whether you’re crunching through autumn leaves or pulling on your coats for a brisk winter wander.

Check the Forestry England Wyre Forest website for walking routes, facilities and visitor information before setting off.

A few tips for autumn and winter adventures

  • Check seasonal events before setting off. Halloween, autumn and Christmas trails usually run for limited periods, and the programme changes throughout the year.
  • Wrap up warm. Waterproof coats, wellies or sturdy shoes and spare socks can make all the difference when little ones find the muddiest puddle. (And spares in the car! With a bag for the wet/dirty items.)
  • Plan around the daylight. Some gardens and attractions close earlier in winter, and paths may not be lit.
  • Keep to marked paths and take care near water. Avoid flooded routes and fast-flowing water after heavy rain.
  • Check opening times, especially in January and February. Some attractions close temporarily for winter maintenance or a seasonal shutdown. Arley Arboretum and Little Owl Farm Park are two examples, so always check their latest visitor information before travelling.

Make your own outdoor adventure

You don’t always need a ticket or a themed trail to make a walk exciting. Try a muddy-puddle jumping challenge, make a nature treasure hunt, look for interesting leaves and twigs, or let the children become woodland detectives searching for signs of birds and other wildlife.

Whether you’re following a Halloween trail, spotting Christmas decorations or simply getting outside for some fresh air in January, there are plenty of ways to make family time outdoors feel like an adventure.
