Our review of ‘No Such Thing As Wolves’
No Such Thing As Wolves is a delightful, laugh-out-loud musical that makes a perfect introduction to theatre for young audiences.
I took my seven-year-old son Jack along to Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio, and from the opening moments he was completely absorbed. The story follows Hettie Hedgehog, who is planning a quiet hibernation until her lively new friend Sydney Squirrel persuades her to throw a party instead – with predictably chaotic (and very funny) results when two mysterious guests turn up with pointy teeth and big ears.
The show is packed with catchy musical numbers that children instantly connect with. They were such a hit that we ended up playing several of the songs on repeat in the car on the way home – a real bonus that the music is available to stream on Spotify. The humour lands beautifully for children, with plenty of knowing touches for grown-ups too.
The cast is absolutely fantastic, delivering a polished, energetic performance filled with warmth and charm. Jack’s favourite character was Wiffy the Wolf, played by Oliver Sidney, who had him giggling throughout, but it’s honestly hard to pick a standout – every woodland character brings something special. A particular highlight comes right at the start, so keep an eye out for the snails, who provide a brilliant and unexpected opening moment.
Over the years, I’ve taken Jack to quite a few theatre productions, but this was without doubt both of our favourite so far. The joy, energy and connection with the audience really set it apart. After the show, Jack even got to meet the cast, which made the whole experience extra special and truly memorable for him.
At just 60 minutes long, No Such Thing As Wolves is the ideal length for primary-aged children. It’s lively, engaging and never overwhelming – although I know that days later, I’ll still be trying to get the incredibly catchy “Let’s Have A Party” out of my head!
