Review- Awful Auntie at The Alex in Birmingham

Awful Auntie Alexandra Birmingham

We had a fantastic evening at The Alex in Birmingham watching Awful Auntie based on the fabulous book by David Walliams. I must confess that I hadn’t read this book, so wasn’t sure about the story line other than it was going to be naughty and a bit gruesome- and it was!

Poor Stella Saxby played by the wonderful Annie Cordoni wakes up from a coma to find out that she has been asleep for quite a while, she doesn’t know where her parents are, all she knows is her Aunt Alberta acted by the hilarious Neal Foster is looking after her. Aunt Alberta is her eccentric Auntie who loves to play tiddly winks and has a pet owl called Wagner acted but the very clever Emily Essery, Alberta is very competitive and must win at everything. Aunt Alberta is very keen to know where her parents deeds to her home are, Saxby Hall is a huge estate with acres of land that’s been in the family for centuries and Alberta wants it!

Can Stella stop her slightly mad Auntie from taking over the Hall? She hasn’t got any other family or friends to help her other than her slightly forgetful butler Gibbon acted by the superb Zain Abrahams but after being locked in the cellar she meets a friend called Soot acted by the fantastic Matthew Allen, is she dreaming , is it all a nightmare or are ghosts real? You’ll have to go along and find out if Stella can save herself and Saxby Hall from her Awful Auntie!

Harper Mills age 7  My favourite character was Soot , he made me laugh so much and he jumped around all the time and he was very kind to Stella. My favourite parts were when Soot and Stella were in the car and when Wagner swooped down to help Stella. After watching the show I want to read the book and see more of David Walliams theatre shows.

Another 5 star show at The Alex in Birmingham, a must see production for all the family if you’ve read the book or not and make sure you keep an eye on your Aunties- None stop laughter for everyone!
