Where to Leave Floral Tributes for Her Majesty the Queen in Derby

Derby City Council has announced that floral tributes can be left for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Cathedral Green, Full Street, Derby DE1 3AF.

A statement read: “It is with great regret that we hear of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Our sadness at this time is shared by people across Derby and the world as we remember with affection and gratitude the lifetime of service given by her.”

Book of Condolence

Members of the public wishing to express their condolences are encouraged to send a message to the Royal Family through the online official Book of Condolence.

A local Book of Condolence has been set up at the Council House, which will be open from 9.00am – 5.00pm on Friday 9 September. The Council House will also be open on Saturday (10 September) and Sunday (11 September) from 9.00am – 5.00pm for those wishing to sign the book.

From Monday 12 September, the book will be available to access Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm, until the day after Her Majesty’s funeral.

If you are unable to get to the Council House, or access the official Book of Condolence online, you may write to Civic Services, Council House, Corporation Street, Derby, DE1 2FS, with a message of condolence. These will be uploaded to the national book in due course. Please note that these messages will not be stored in the local history archives.

Tributes

Residents who wish to make a tribute to Her Majesty are advised, if they are able to, to make a donation to a charity of their choosing or one of the charities or organisations which Her Majesty has supported, as suggested by the Royal Household.

For those who wish to leave floral tributes, please do so at Cathedral Green, Full St, Derby DE1 3AF.

Please ensure that floral tributes are left on the grass, and not on any walkways, and are not wrapped in paper or plastic. Flowers not placed in designated area will be moved to the official area, and any wrapped in paper or plastic may have to be removed. Please note that cards and other items will not be kept.

Flowers will be removed the day after the funeral and be composted. This compost will be used to grow a tree in remembrance in the Sir Peter Hilton Memorial gardens.

Events

Derby Cathedral will be holding a number of services throughout the day tomorrow (Friday 19 September), for those who wish to pay their respects.

The services will run at: 8.30am, 12.00 noon, and 5.30pm

Derby Cathedral is open daily from 8.00am and 7.00pm for people to light a candle and pay their respects.

Flags

The Union flags will be flown at half-mast for ten days as a mark of respect as we enter into a period of national public mourning.

Union flags above the Council House and in the Sir Peter Hilton Memorial Garden have been lowered to half-mast and will remain in that position until 8.00am on the day after Her Majesty’s funeral. Other flagpoles on Council property will remain bare until the period of national mourning ends.

The Council House along with the A52 and St. Alkmund’s Way footbridges have been lit up purple as a further mark of respect to Her Majesty.

Road Closures

To facilitate the opening of the Book of Condolence, Corporation Street will be temporarily closed. Diversions will be in place for all vehicles, including buses.
