Battersea House Tutors
It was around Year 5 when I first noticed the change.
Up until then, homework had been something we barely thought about. It was quick, straightforward, and usually done without much help. Then, almost without warning, things started to feel different. Tasks became longer, the questions needed more explanation, and there were more moments of hesitation at the kitchen table.
I remember one evening in particular. What should have been a simple maths task turned into a long pause, followed by, “I don’t get this anymore.” That was new. It wasn’t that the ability had disappeared overnight, but the expectations had clearly shifted.
We started making small changes at home. Instead of focusing on getting the right answer straight away, I began asking them to talk me through their thinking. Explaining how they approached a problem seemed to help them organise it in their own mind. When it came to reading, we spent time discussing what they’d just read, rather than rushing through it. Even reading together, something they claimed they were far too old for, helped more than expected.
As Year 6 approached, conversations about secondary school started to come up more often. There was excitement about new subjects and a bigger environment, but also a quieter uncertainty about whether they would be able to keep up. It became clear that feeling confident in maths and English would make that transition far smoother.
At that point, I understood why some parents look for extra support during this stage. It’s less about getting ahead and more about making sure confidence doesn’t slip just as expectations rise again.
That’s where we found the services of Battersea House made a difference. With one-to-one online tutoring, our children could work at their own pace, strengthen key skills in reading, writing, and maths, and approach the move to secondary school feeling more prepared and secure.
