Celebrate 25 years of The Tatton Park Flower Show

Tatton Flower Show

Escape to the Emerald City Garden

Tatton Park will mark the 25th anniversary of the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show with its iconic multifaceted Emerald City Garden taking inspiration from L. Frank Baum’s magical tale ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ which has thrilled readers and viewers over the last 124 years and is considered to be a modern American fairytale masterpiece. In addition, the Garden will explore the immense benefits of spending time in green spaces within an urban environment, proven by extensive research in recent years.

There’s no place like home

Simon Tetlow, head gardener, says of Tatton’s Emerald City Garden:

“It echoes the central theme in ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ which is the journey to reach a personal sanctuary, like home, while also exemplifying the mental health benefits of a green environment and how it is possible to incorporate this into an urban space however small using what you have available. With this in mind the Garden will feature familiar luscious emerald green house plants, together with Cyathea, Dicksonia, ferns, mosses, Bromeliad and Tillandsias, building an oasis of calm, an escape room that resets the spirits and transports the visitor to a place where imagination and horticulture combine to create magic, a sanctuary of tranquillity where you can feel refreshed, rebuilt and restored to face the next day.”

The Fernery

The Garden will be reminiscent of Tatton’s own Fernery, designed in the late 1850s by Joseph Paxton, which is one of the most outstanding buildings of its kind still used for its original purpose. It is a showcase for the magnificent New Zealand tree ferns brought back by Captain Charles Randle Egerton from one of his voyages, and a welcome oasis of calm for visitors to Tatton, especially on a rainy day!

The RHS Flower Show Tatton Park is on from 17 – 21 July. Find out more here.
