Explore the car of the future at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon

British Motor Museum Transitions Exhibition 2023

Alongside all of the usual activities and fun family trails, the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, has opened a new exhibition in time for the summer holidays. ‘Transitions: The Impact of Innovation’ will run until Summer 2024 and explores the technologies that are bringing cars into the future and considers their effects. The car has shaped our world for the better, but also for the worse. The exhibition asks us to think about how travelling by car will look if it is made safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.

Back in 2019, I took the kids along to visit ‘The Car, The Future, Me’ which was an exhibition at the museum which looked at the evolution of electric cars and how the motor industry was evolving. Today we headed there again to visit this new exhibition which effectively provides an update and looks at where we are in 2023 – how have we moved forward with the technology used to power our cars? How close are we to have fully or even partially autonomous motor vehicles?

My family have spent some really enjoyable times at the British Motor Museum in the past and this was no exception. The new exhibition has lots of ‘hands-on’ activities to help bring some of the complex engineering concepts to life for the children as well as a simulation of an autonomous vehicle on the road which proved particularly popular with our family (so unlike them to be drawn to a screen!). Make sure you take a moment to watch the video of a ‘real life’ driverless car in London – it really blew our minds how close the technology in to making this a reality!
