The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden is a community garden project, aimed at bringing the magic and restorative power of nature into the lives of old and young. I have often been asked why I set up this garden project, and I can think of many important and serious reasons, but when it comes down to it, my answer has to be 'just for the sake of it'.
If you think about it, we all need a lot more activities in life that are just for the sake of it! When do we ever get time, or feel allowed to do things with no end result or goal being attached? This is when we often get valuable insights into our children’s worlds, and importantly take a moment to have little else to worry about other than what size stick you need to make a magic wand with! It has to be said, this project is unashamedly about the pure enjoyment of being outdoors, in nature and being part of a community.
Set in a space that has previously been little noticed in central Salisbury, the old St Clements church yard is a perfect spot for recreating something of the wonder of childhood. I hope to really get the garden looking magical this year, with the help of a volunteer team and to inspire everyone in the community to love nature and learn how to look after it. With its old churchyard charm and little areas for wildlife to thrive, that will be planted with roses galore, who would not love a magical Secret Garden?
Come in to find out more, to get gardening for wildlife tips, and to relax and be inspired! Now a registered CIC company. Not for profit; just for love!
Drop in any Sunday to have a go at our 'treasure' trail. Bring a match box or small container and get exploring! We give you the list of things to find, and you do the rest! Parent-led mini workshops are always available. From time to time, other activities may include talks about bees and other wild things, art events, picnic days, dressing up days, story readings and gardening for schools groups.
The Secret Garden is open on Sundays from March and can be accessed from the gate on Mill Road, near the roundabout. Follow Rebecca on facebook.com/TheSecretGardenSalisbury for further updates.
