
Departures Exhibition at The Hold
Departures will explore emigration from Suffolk to all across the globe throughout history.
The exhibition will uncover personal stories of emigrants from Suffolk including early colonists arriving on the east coast of America, the excitement of the Australian and Californian Gold Rushes, GI brides departing for America after World War Two, and people setting off from Suffolk today to start a new life.
Who were these emigrants? Why did they leave? What did they experience?
We will explore what is empire and colonisation and what the legacies are today. As well as moving accounts of enforced emigration and child migration.
Including star items on loan to Suffolk Archives such as original letters by early American colonist John Winthrop, from the Massachusetts Historical Society. As well as the original passenger list for the Titanic on loan from The National Archives.
