The contestants are ready. The judges are waiting. It’s 2002 and Winchester Science Centre is the home of Science Starz, a science show like you’ve never heard before! Between Saturday 17th September and Sunday 13th November, visitors are invited to join the final show in the Science Centre’s celebration of 20 years of science wow. Join the audience of an awesome science music reality show and discover the epic connections between sound and science. And don’t miss the two unforgettable Autumn Planetarium shows, hands-on nature exploration in Bio:Space and two floors of hands-on interactives.

For the final time this year visitors are invited to take a trip down memory lane at Winchester Science Centre. Throughout 2022, the Science Centre team have been bringing back some of their best show themes and demos from the past 20 years – all with a retro 2002 twist. To end the celebrations with a fanfare, visitors are invited to find out all about sound. Back in 2002 the music scene was dominated by singing talent show winners. Shows like Pop Idol produced the highest selling singles year on year. But is there any science involved in music? In Science Starz, visitors will join the Science Centre Inspirers to find out.

Percussion and wind instruments will come to life through exciting science experiments. The hugely popular dancing fire of the Ruben’s tube will be back to dazzle the crowds. And the ultimate science musical instrument – the mind-blowing, light-bending laser harp – will be on hand to wow everyone. But which scientific sound machine will be crowned the reality show winner? The vote is up to the audience, they decide who wins!

And that’s not all there is to do at Winchester Science Centre this Autumn…

Make some memorable moments the whole family will be talking about with a trip to the Planetarium. Visitors can choose from an exciting presenter-led live show or a subtitled film show filled with fun characters. Blast off into the Solar System for the ultimate family trip in the live show, Solar System Adventure. Start your journey on Earth under a blanket of stars before being whisked into orbit to discover the awesome scale of the Solar System. Or have you ever wondered if there is life beyond Earth? Join Harry Potter star, Rupert Grint, as he narrates an exploration of space to find out if we are alone, in the subtitled film show We Are Aliens. Keep an eye out for special BSL days where an interpreter will be signing in the live Planetarium show and during Science Starz.

Families can also meet some of the residents of the Science Centre’s South Down’s National Park location, including mealworms, beetles and ants, in nature-based exploration zone, Bio:Space. And don’t forget the hugely popular, and huge in size, explosive demos in Science Live that take place right on the exhibition floor throughout the day. These are definitely not ones to try at home!

And with two floors of fun, hands-on interactives, families can also embark on an exhilarating adventure through the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). Blast off in the out-of-this-world Explorer:Space zone. Find out what it’s like to work in space by using the space gloves, discover how gravity affects weight on different planets and explore lightyears, space rocks and what it takes to become an astronaut. Venture into an enormous 10m long playable guitar, in the sound, vibration and hearing zone. Experience the wonder of acoustics inside the sonic rocket, climb inside a giant ear and try your hand at British Sign Language. There’s even an opportunity to join the rescue crew to save Humphrey the Humpback Whale and find out about real university research in the Bringing Research to Life zone, plus so much more!
