Station Scamps at Head of Steam, Darlington Railway Museum
Station Scamps is a weekly activity group for under 5s and their grown-ups.
We meet on a Friday from 10am -12.30. Come along and stay for as long as you want, and you also get to explore the museum too. It costs £2 per adult, with under 5s free, and it’s free to family annual pass holders. (An annual pass is £15 for 2 adults and up to 4 children for a year – look out in school holidays for reduced price offers).
We have toys, and trains of course, small world and messy play. We have themes connecting our play to the railways and the museum, and these include ‘railway café’, ‘fix it and clean it’ and ‘moving stuff’. We encourage role play, sharing and having fun, and hope the grown-ups join in as well as meeting new people.
Our messy play includes using paint, play dough, collage materials, water, sand and sensory materials.
Station Scamps is just one way for families to explore the museum. We have trails and explorer bags to encourage children to look around and talk to their grown-ups about what they can find. There is a play room too with puzzles, dressing up, bricks, trains and small world toys. We also have a reading den in the museum with a range of story, picture and information books and a snug place to sit.
We have lots of activities for all the family in school holidays, including things for older children to do.
We try and make our venue as easy to access as possible. We have free parking on site, including accessible bays and a bike rack. We have a baby change room, and our accessible toilets have step stools and potty training seats. You are welcome to breastfeed wherever you are comfortable in the museum. The museum has level access for buggies as it is all on one floor.
Look out for more to see, do and talk about in the museum as we try out some new things in the next few months!
