I’ll be honest – I’ve been struggling to get into the Christmas spirit this year. Maybe it’s because the year has flown by, or the constant juggle that comes with family life, or even the wave of winter bugs doing the rounds at the moment. Whatever the reason, the festive feeling just hadn’t quite landed.

But then on Tuesday, I took my 8-year-old to see Red Riding Hood at Queen’s Hall in Hexham, and it was exactly the lift I needed. This production is an absolute treat for families. It’s warm, witty and wonderfully feel-good, with clever writing that keeps the adults smiling while giving the kids plenty to giggle about. The casting is superb. They are full of energy, heart, and sparkle. You can really feel the care and creativity that’s gone into bringing this story to life.

One of the things that made it so special was the sense of involvement everyone felt. From the tiniest audience members to the older folk, the whole room was laughing, joining in and soaking up the fun from start to finish. It had that magical, shared excitement that only an excellent show can create and it also is a timely reminder that December is not just about the presents and the decorations but these special moments that we share with our friends, family and loved ones.

Queen’s Hall itself is such a lovely venue. It’s friendly, welcoming, and just the right size. Not too big to feel overwhelming for little ones, and not too small to miss out on that proper theatre buzz. It creates the perfect atmosphere for a family outing. There’s a lovely selection of treats available to purchase before and during the break + dress-up photo opportunities for children downstairs.
