RGS NEWCASTLE NAMED INDEPENDENT SENIOR SCHOOL OF THE YEAR 2025
The Royal Grammar School (RGS) Newcastle is celebrating after being named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes School Awards.
The North East’s leading co-educational school is delighted to have received this national recognition during its 500th anniversary year. The award celebrates the school’s innovative approach to inclusion, its commitment to championing diversity, support for students with SEND, and its broader impact on the community.
At the Tes Schools Awards on Friday 20th June, RGS Newcastle also celebrated the nomination of Mr James Miller, Head of RGS Junior School, for ‘Independent Headteacher of the Year’. Although he did not take home the award, his well-deserved shortlisting is a testament to his exceptional leadership and the strength of RGS Junior School.
Reflecting on the awards evening, Headteacher Geoffrey Stanford, said: “Receiving the ‘Independent Senior School of the Year’ award at the Tes Awards was a proud moment – not just for what it says about RGS today, but for how it reflects the values that have shaped us for over 500 years: a sense of belonging, belief in one another, a love of learning, and the ambition to succeed. To receive this recognition in our quincentenary year makes it all the more special.
“We are especially proud that Mr Miller was shortlisted alongside our alumnus James Dahl, Master of Wellington College, and the very deserving winner on the evening, RGS Governor Sue Woodroofe, Principal of The Grammar School at Leeds – a powerful reflection of the reach and impact of the RGS community.”
The awards – often dubbed the ‘Oscars of education’ and now in their 17th year – recognise the very best teachers, schools and trusts from across UK state and independent sectors, spanning early years, primary, and secondary education.
