May Half Term, WWT Washington

What better way to spend this month’s half term than outdoors in nature.

WWT Washington has lots of activities for inquisitive young minds. These events are included in the general admission price.

Saturday 24th May: Build a bug house and explore our bug hotel 1-2.30pm

Join volunteer Kate and explore our bug house and insect garden. Enjoy a walk around soaking up the spring sun and learn the best flowers to plant to help insects such as bees and butterflies thrive. PLUS try your hand at building a bug house using recycled milk cartons and card board tubes, a masterpiece that you can take home to decorate and put outdoors!

Sunday 25th and Friday 30th May: Pond Dipping 1 – 3pm

Grab a net and explore the world underwater with our education team during this family-friendly pond dipping session. Visit the interactive Pondzone and search for water snails, great diving beetles and their formidable larvae.Learn how to safely catch and ID your finds before carefully releasing them back into the water.

Monday 26th and Saturday 31st May: Minibeast Hunting 1 – 3pm

Explore the world of soil, leaves and dry wood as you hunt for mini-beasts in Hollowood. Use a dusting brush, magnifying glass and observation trays to get a closer look of woodlice, millipedes, stink bugs and more. No need to book – these sessions are drop-in!

Tuesday 27th May: Clay modelling and natural printing 1 -3pm

Join our learning team for some creative fun in the woods as part of our May half term activities. Learn different printing and mark-making techniques such as hapa-zome (the Japanese art of leaf-dyeing), or try your hand at using clay to make bug shapes or funny faces on tree trunks. This is a great activity for families to enjoy and you can take home anything you create!

Wednesday 28th May: Den Building 1-3pm

Meet opposite the flamingo exhibit to enjoy an afternoon of building dens out of branches, sheets and other materials you find – you never know when you might need this skill in the wild!
