Creepy Halloween Crafts at Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall

Lurking in wait at Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall this half term holidays are some Creepy Crafts that will make your visit to the award-winning attraction extra spine-tingling!  Taking place from Saturday 19 October to Sunday 3 November, young wizards, witches, ghosts and ghouls won’t want to miss this fiendish Family Friendly activity.

There will be bats hanging from the rafters and spiders spinning their webs in the Master’s Chamber, which is where the Creepy Crafts will take place. Once you’ve decided on a batty bat or spooky spider you can decorate your scary (or cute!) Halloween friend and either take it home or add it to the display.

Spiders and bats feature vividly within Shakespeare’s plays so there is lots to take inspiration from.  For example, in a Midsummer Night’s Dream spiders are described as “long legged spinners” and the “wool of bat” is one of the deadly ingredients, alongside “eye of newt and toe of frog” in the spell chanted by the three witches in Macbeth. And in the room where Shakespeare would once have chanted his Latin lessons look out for the witches’ marks, which were etched onto the walls during the 15th century as a way to ward off evil.

You won’t see ghosts during your visit, but you will meet Master Thomas Jenkins who has travelled back from Shakespeare’s day to give visitors an interactive lesson in the same spirit that young William would have experienced. There are also Family Friendly activities to be found in the Georgian classroom, including traditional games, quill writing, puzzles and Tudor dress up, and a Family Quiz – all included in your ticket price.

Creepy Crafts kits are priced at £2 and can be purchased from the welcome desk and then decorated in the Master’s Chamber using a selection of the colourful materials.

Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall is open daily (11am to 5pm). Entry is Adults £13.50, Concessions £12, Children (5-15, under 5’s free) £8, Families (2 adults & 2 children) £32.50, Extra Child with family ticket £5.
