The Flying Scotsman at the Severn Valley Railway

Our Trip on the Flying Scotsman with the Severn Valley Railway

On behalf of Raring2Go! magazine, we had the absolute pleasure of experiencing a truly special journey aboard the iconic Flying Scotsman along the Severn Valley Railway. It was an honour to be part of such a historic moment, and sharing the day with my 10-year-old made it all the more unforgettable. From the magic of steam to the wonder of heritage, it was a day we’ll never forget (plus we made an appearance on BBC Midlands Today too!).

Why This Visit Was So Special

This trip was far more than just a train ride – it marked a milestone for the Severn Valley Railway. It was the first full-line service from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth since the line reopened after a landslip at Mor Brook bridge back in January. To celebrate, the legendary Flying Scotsman was chosen to haul the inaugural service – a fitting tribute to such an important occasion.

Tickets for this event sold out in just three minutes, a clear sign of the excitement and love people have for this historic locomotive. The railway also hosted a special “Swingin’ Sixties” weekend, commemorating 60 years of preservation. The event was a real treat, with live music, vintage cars, a Ferris wheel at The Engine House, and of course, those spectacular steam rides.

Our Personal Adventure

From the moment we arrived at Kidderminster Station, there was a palpable buzz in the air. Steam swirled around us, and the excitement of fellow passengers set the tone for the day. My 10-year-old’s eyes lit up at the sight of the polished carriages and gleaming loco ready to depart.

As we travelled through the beautiful countryside of Worcestershire and Shropshire, stopping at charming stations like Bewdley, Highley, Arley, and Bridgnorth, it felt like stepping into a different era. The chuffing of the engine, the hiss of steam, and the sight of the Flying Scotsman in action was pure magic. My child couldn’t stop smiling – waving at people on the platforms and soaking up every minute.

At Bridgnorth Station, we explored its wonderful retro charm, from the Railwayman’s Arms refreshment room to vintage-style gift shops. We even got a glimpse into the locomotive works; a behind-the-scenes look that the SVR occasionally offers, and something families will definitely enjoy.

Why It’s a Brilliant Place to Visit With Kids

The Severn Valley Railway is the perfect destination for families of all ages.

Younger children are captivated by the steam and spectacle, while older kids and adults will enjoy the history, beautiful scenery, and hands-on experiences.

There’s always something happening – from signal box tours to cab rides on heritage diesel trains and open days at the engine works – making each visit exciting and unique.

Final Thoughts

It was truly a privilege to represent Raring2Go! on such a memorable day. The Flying Scotsman is more than just a locomotive; it’s a living legend, and seeing it in action was an unforgettable experience for both of us. The dedication of the Severn Valley Railway team and its wonderful volunteers made the whole day feel extra special.

Whether you’re a railway enthusiast or simply looking for a unique day out with the kids, the SVR is a fantastic place to visit. With scenic steam journeys, heritage stations, and exciting family events throughout the year, there’s something for everyone.

A heartfelt thank you to the team at the Severn Valley Railway for keeping history alive – and for giving families like ours a chance to be part of it.

All aboard for more steam-filled adventures!

A note from Severn Valley Railway..

The Severn Valley Railway marked a major milestone in style as it celebrated its 60th anniversary with the return of the iconic Flying Scotsman and a fully reopened line following January’s landslip at Mor Brook Bridge. Over four packed days (25–28 July), more than 4,300 passengers travelled behind the legendary locomotive, while many more enjoyed the lively Swinging Sixties weekend celebrations. The event brought a welcome boost in visitors and revenue after a challenging start to the year and was hailed by SVR’s managing director as the perfect way to celebrate both the railway’s reunification and its six decades of heritage.
