Fun FREE museum for kids, in Kidderminster, for a limited time only!

Severn Valley Railway is currently home to a fun FREE museum for kids, but only for a limited time, so don’t hang about! I had the pleasure of attending its launch this morning, and trust me, your little ones are going to LOVE it. Here’s why…

‘Inspiration’ is basically a fun, interactive railway museum… on a train! Yep, an actual train. It’s going on tour across the country, but it’s starting its journey right here in Kidderminster – so it’s brand-spanking new!

Now, I’m sure you’ll be seeing plenty of features about the history of the railway and the fact that it’s celebrating an incredible 200 years (amazing stuff!) – but here at Raring2go! we’re all about how it works for families with young kids, so here’s what to expect from this fab experience:

The train has 4 carriages to walk through and enjoy:

1. PAST

This first carriage is like a warm-up zone; a great intro for little  minds. You’ll learn about the history of the railway and why it’s such a big deal, through engaging videos and hands-on exhibits.
My personal fave fact of the day? Time used to be different across the UK until the railway made it standardised! Mind blown.
There are loads of interesting facts, plus a fun “Can You Find…” challenge for kids to get stuck into.

2. PRESENT

This one is a ‘Wonderlab on Wheels’, and the kids will be in their element in here... It’s packed with interactive fun. Kids can test their skills by building bridges (harder than it looks!), race wheels down tracks (which shape will win?), and play in an interactive sandpit -move the sand around to make water or mountains and see how it affects the railway line – totally absorbing stuff.

3. FUTURE

This carriage is all about looking ahead. Kids (and grown-ups) get to see what jobs could be part of their future, but don’t worry, it’s not a snooze-fest! It’s brilliantly hands-on with balancing games, including a real-life Tetris, railway track coding, and even a cyber security game you can play on your phone. Much more, but I’ll leave you with some surprises.
They’ve made it super fun, even for those with short attention spans. There’s plenty to press, play and explore – and it’s really inspiring for older kids starting to think about “what they want to be when they grow up”.

4. TOGETHER

And back to calm! See who’s helped create this experience. Plus learn how you can help keep it all going.

Top tip: Once you’ve explored the Inspiration train, why not turn it into a full day out and book a trip on one of the heritage steam trains? It’s optional, of course, but it makes for a lovely little adventure.

In a nutshell? It’s educational, fun, and free* – what’s not to love? Just remember, it’s only here for a limited time, so hop aboard while you can. The kids will have a blast – and honestly, you might learn a thing or two as well!

*A small booking fee is charged, but that is all!
