Best places to go stargazing with kids in the UK

Feather Down Farms Stargazing

The early months of the year, when the days in the UK are short, are a perfect time to take the kids out and try a little bit of stargazing.

Stargazing with kids might not be the first activity that springs to mind in the UK but there are some surprisingly fantastic opportunities and locations out there for us to observe the night sky. If you can get away from the bright city lights and find the right countryside location, you can easily immerse yourself in the wonders of space and the wide universe above us.  As astrologer Sky Walker once said, “In the quiet of the night, we discover the universe’s secrets.”

Did you know that there are 21 International Dark Sky Reserves and that 7 of those are actually located in the UK’s National Parks or AONB? As well as these, there are many more local areas classified as Dark Sky Discovery sites.

Many of these discovery sites are located near to some of the glamping sites operated by Feather Down Farms, surrounded by beautiful countryside and clear night skies.

Tips for stargazing in the UK with kids:

  • Stay away from bright lights, including street lights and even mobile phones, they can make it harder for your eyes to adjust and see the array of stars above you.
  • Wrap up warm. You’ll see more stars on a clear night but that also means that it could be pretty chilly so bring lots of layers with you.
  • Check the weather  – a cloudy or overcast day is not what you want! Clear skies with very little / no clouds are the perfect conditions for stargazing.
