Where to go for a Day Out in the Midlands

Birmingham (including Solihull and Sutton Coldfield)
England’s second city, Birmingham is packed full of exciting attractions which are mostly all within walking distance of one another. From museums to shopping and miles of canals to green open spaces there is something to keep all members of the family busy.

Black Country (including Stourbridge and Dudley)
The Black Country has no real set boundaries but Dudley is considered to be at its heart. This used to be one of the most heavily industrialised areas in Britain, in fact, the anchor for the Titanic was made here! Today it’s more famous for the 950 castle sited in the grounds of Dudley Zoo and is home to the UNESCO Geopark Global Geopark, near Wrens Nest.  It’s also renown for foods like faggots and peas, the strange Black Country dialect and The Peaky Blinders!

Worcestershire ( and Wyre Forest)
Worcestershire is the birthplace of the famous Lea Perrins Worcester Sauce and also home to the fantastic West Midland Safari Park, near Bewdley. The River Severn runs through the county as do the steam trains of the Severn Valley Railway. We’ve highlighted lots of ideas for a day out in Worcestershire, including animal parks, museums, and castles.

Warwickshire (including Stratford Upon Avon)
Famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon and a large expanse of rural green belt, Warwickshire feels very different from other, more built up, areas of the West Midlands. There are still many places to visit and things to do with the kids. Whether you are looking to indulge in a little bit of medieval history or explore the great outdoors there is more than enough to keep you entertained.

Herefordshire
With two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Herefordshire is renowned for its stunning scenery, incredible views and picturesque villages. Home of Hereford beef cattle and famous cider makers, it is a foodies favourite – but there are also loads of visitor attractions to enjoy, offering fun for all the family.

The National Forest & Derby
The National Forest has transformed the Midlands’ historic coalmining and heavy industrial areas into a lush, green haven right in the heart of the Midlands. Spanning 200 square miles, the dedicated green area is home to some of the UK’s best attractions. It offers fantastic days out across Derby, Burton-on-Trent and Ashby-de-la Zouch.

The Peak District National Park
England’s first National Park the Peak District turned 70 in 2021! This dedicated area of natural beauty spans 555 square miles, and is a great place for camping, hiking and caving; home to arguably England’s best views. From the famous waters of Buxton to the delicious puddings of Bakewell, and from the top of the Heights of Abraham to the deep caves of Poole’s Cavern, the Peak District has something for everyone.
