Winter Experience at the Auckland Project

A traditional experience with a twist awaits those visiting The Auckland Project this winter season.
Expect all of the usual festive ingredients mixed with an element of the unexpected!
Things to see and do:
Our Winter Experience offers a whole host of events and experiences to get you in the mood for Christmas.
- Deck The Halls* – The Throne Room of Auckland Castle has been festooned with a 50 ft long dried flower garland lovingly hand-crafted by our Gardeners and Curatorial team. The garland features more than 30,000 flower heads, all individually picked from our 17th-century Walled Garden.
- Neapolitan Nativity* – Be dazzled by a monumental Neapolitan Nativity scene in the Faith Gallery. The 18th-century Baroque créche, known in Italian as a presepe, is a giant Nativity scene staged in a true-life Neapolitan setting. One of the most important examples outside Italy, the display measures a remarkable 11ft tall and 15ft wide!
- Project X* – Sugar, spice and all things nice have combined to create a unique display on the first floor of Auckland Tower. With so many different and fascinating buildings around Bishop Auckland, we thought we’d recreate some of the ones we’re lucky enough to look after – using gingerbread! Come and see for yourself how well our baking team have captured the details of some familiar landmarks.
- A Festive Feast – Eat, drink and be merry with a festive afternoon tea, Festive Fayre or dining experience in the atmospheric Old Library of Auckland Castle.
- Family Fun – No. 42 and No. 43 will be hosting family friendly events and drop-in activities through the Christmas season.
* Included within our Auckland Castle Christmas ticket.
