Summer 2024 at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

Summer 2024 at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

There are lots of fun exhibitions and activities planned this Summer at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum.

JOY…Inspired By Nature

Feel the joy at our Summer exhibition.

Acclaimed artists Nicola Richardson and Marianne Taviner of Vortex Creates have transformed the space into an eye-popping wonderland that playfully reconnects us to nature. Joy transcends individual boundaries, fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity. Nature inspires and connects us to something larger than ourselves, fostering a sense of awe and wonder. JOY…inspired by nature immerses you in the wonder of joyful designs and transformative spaces. Wander through larger-than-life installations that infuse the gallery with bursts of colour and delight. Marvel at Vortex Creates’ two new works that find joyous connections between creativity and nature. Discover dazzling works by local artists curated by Vortex Creates specifically for the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery. Giant flowers? Check. Bursts of rainbow colours? You bet. Sounds and smells that awaken inner tranquillity. This show wants to connect you to nature, sparking your joy; and with the duo’s signature bold and beautiful designs infusing every inch, you’re in for a treat.

JOY …inspired by nature features two special commissions, a scentscape by Gemma Costin and a soundscape by Ashley James Brown. Local artist, Abeda Begum joins the team in crafting the final installation.

Jurassic Playground

The Herbert’s popular FREE early year’s exhibition for families will be returning this summer with Jurassic Playground. Aimed at 0-4 but older children are welcome. The Herbert’s popular FREE early year’s exhibition for families will be returning this summer with Jurassic Playground. Taking inspiration from Dippy, the Nation’s favourite dinosaur, from the Natural History Museum, our youngest visitors will encounter specially designed art works in a world of sensory spaces, that will encourage imaginations and allow children the freedom to explore in a space designed specifically for under 5s. Older children are welcome to join in too, as this is an inclusive family experience.

The early years exhibition will feature ceiling installations from local artist, Julia Snowdin, to take in the wonders all around and up and above as babies, children and their grown-ups lie back and relax in our sensory pods. Regional artist, Roots0121 is returning to the Herbert once again this year to redesign the pod spaces, bringing in intrinsic street art design to the play space with a Jurassic twist. Tactile resources and playthings will be spread throughout the exhibition, with calming sound effects and gentle lighting adding to the overall ambiance of the space.

Open 7 days a week throughout the duration of the summer holidays, this is the perfect space to retreat to for free, family fun.

Joyful Jurassic Crafts

Join us on an adventure of rewilding and reconnecting. Suitable for ages 3+ but all are welcome. This Summer, we will be taking inspiration from our Dippy installation, visiting from the Natural History Museum, and celebrating nature and making as explored in our ‘JOY’ exhibition. Join us on an adventure of rewilding and reconnecting with natural Jurassic environments, exploring fossils, and sowing ideas of greening to craft our way through the summer holidays.
