Lantern Making at Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall
Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall will light up the February half term holidays with a brand new lantern making activity for families. Running from Saturday 14 February to Sunday 22 February, the hands-on activity invites visitors to create illuminated lanterns inspired by Stratford-upon-Avon’s most iconic landmarks.
Visitors can choose from two designs: one featuring Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall, and the other a townscape of some of Stratford-upon-Avon’s most recognisable buildings. Taking place in the atmospheric surroundings of the Master’s Chamber, participants can cut out, assemble and decorate their chosen design before turning it into a lantern to take home. Craft packs can be collected on arrival from the welcome desk and include a battery candle to light up the finished lantern.
Lindsey Armstrong, General Manager of Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall, says, “The lanterns are a lovely decoration to make and a beautiful reminder of your visit to Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall. It’s a simple way to brighten up the darker days for the whole family to enjoy.”
A visit to Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall also includes the opportunity to meet Master Thomas Jenkins, the Tudor schoolmaster who taught Shakespeare, who is ready to deliver lessons just as a young William would have experienced, in the original setting. In the adjoining Georgian classroom, visitors can enjoy traditional games, quill writing, puzzles and Tudor dress up; all of which is included in the entry price.
Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall is open daily (11am to 5pm). Lantern craft packs are £1. Entry is Adults £13.50, Concessions £12, Children (5-16) £8 (under 5’s free), Families (2 adults & 2 children) £32.50, Extra Child with family ticket £5. Tickets can be bought in advance or on the day from the welcome desk. Visitors can also buy combined tickets with the MAD Museum and other attractions connected to William Shakespeare’s life, including Shakespeare’s Birthplace, New Place and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. As well as being a Family Friendly attraction Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall is dog friendly, meaning that well-behaved four legged friends can accompany their owners.
