Children’s Opera – The Enchanted Pig at Playbox Theatre, Warwick
This Summer, a children’s opera – The Enchanted Pig – is coming to Warwick.
The season ends on Sunday 25 June at The Dream Factory, Playbox Theatre’s highly valued venue on the Stratford Road in Warwick. This will be a performance of the opera The Enchanted Pig by Jonathan Dove. The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s summer opera will be performed earlier in the month in Birmingham and then comes to Warwick. This happened last year for the first time and the Charpentier/Offenbach double bill was a sell-out and was then talked about by the audience for months!
The opera will be conducted by Anthony Kraus and directed by Stuart Barker. Jonathan Dove has some thirty operas to his name, including Flight, which was given at the Glyndebourne Festival. The Enchanted Pig draws on Romanian and Norwegian fairy tales and has been described as a magical family show which will appeal to children aged 8 to 80.
Festival Director Richard Phillips adds, “Leamington Music is delighted to expand its links with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, which also includes the annual Leamington Music Prize which has been awarded to outstanding students from the Conservatoire since 2009. The Conservatoire’s brass band and other student groups have played their part in previous Winter Seasons too.”
“Leamington Music takes a break over July, August and September, as it prepares for its eighteenth winter season, which opens on 6 October in Leamington with the Berlin-based Leonkoro String Quartet, winners of the most recent London international String Quartet Competition and then in Warwick on 10 October with Ex Cathedra and Jeffrey Skidmore in the Vespers by Rachmaninoff, whose music dominated this year’s Festival and proved so popular with our audience.”
