Durham Christmas Festival

Christmas is back with Durham Christmas Festival

Christmas 2021 is certainly going to be far more like the Christmas we’re accustomed to … and with the return of Durham Christmas Festival, it certainly feels like the festive season will get off to a great start (and feel familiar at the same time).

Durham Christmas Festival opens on Friday 3rd December, running for three days.  It consists of four markets: the Craft & Gift Marquee* on Palace Green, the Regional Producers’ Market in the Cloisters of Durham Cathedral**, a Festive Outdoor Market in Durham Market Place and Durham Market Hall which will be open on all three days (and every day in December up to Christmas).

In total, there will be over 170 independent businesses between the four markets, offering gifts, Christmas decorations, festive food and more.  And that makes it a great opportunity to tick of many items from the Christmas shopping list!

The Craft & Gift Marquee* on Palace Green will be home to 100 different small businesses, selected to give shoppers great choice.  The Regional Producers’ Market** in the beautiful Cloisters of Durham Cathedral is where you’ll find seasonal food and drink, and many treats to take home.

As well as the markets, the city will be filled with the familiar sounds of the festive season with buskers and performers throughout, adding the feeling that this really is the start of Christmas.  A highlight each year, is Carols for All in Durham Cathedral, taking place on both the Saturday and Sunday.

With numerous places in Durham City to sit and relax over food and drinks after the shopping is complete, it’s a great day out, for families or friends.

Colin Wilkes MBE, Managing Director of Durham Markets Company which organises the festival together with Durham University, commented: “Festive cheer is guaranteed with loads of shopping opportunities and Christmas music throughout the city.  Come into Durham and enjoy! This time last year, we were in and out of lockdowns, Christmas was virtually cancelled at the last moment.  This year, we’re working hard to give everyone the Durham Christmas Festival we know people long for, all we ask is that people enjoy it safely.”

Visitors to the festival will be encouraged to enjoy the event safely by adhering to the visitor guidelines, which will shortly be available to view on the website.
