South Derbyshire Music Centre Music lessons

South Derbyshire Music Centre (SDMC) has a long tradition of providing exciting opportunities for children and young people to come together to make music and to make new friends.

Take a look at what we do, and if you are interested, come along and see for yourself.

South derbyshire music centre music lessons

We have a team of qualified music teachers, all of whom are accredited to the Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership. All teachers have a DBS check and children can attend as many ensembles as they like during each week as guided by our teachers.

SDMC is self-financed through pupils’ subscriptions, grants and donations and is a registered charity  (no 1008568) and we also offer financial support for those families who may have difficulty in paying their subscription.

If you are interested in finding out more about our music lessons, please contact our Centre Coordinator, Helen Smith, who will arrange for you to visit our Centre, via the contact information below.

SDMC is based at The William Allit School, Sunnyside, Newhall, Derbyshire, DE11 0TL. Search for ‘music lessons near me’.

The children are encouraged to use good diction and tone, and to develop their vocal range and musicianship.

Youth Choir
Tuesday. 6:30-7:25PM
This choir is a four-part choir (sopranos, altos, tenors and basses) so boys whose voices are changing are particularly encouraged to join this thriving ensemble. This group is for children year 6/7 and above.

Club Band
Tuesday. 6:10-7:00PM
If you can play three or four notes on a woodwind or brass instrument, or on a recorder, this is the group for you! If you’ve been learning one of the new Doods or Toots, you’re welcome too. We have lots of fun in learning how to play our instruments together and there is a small team of people who will sit alongside you to help if necessary.

Junior Band
Tuesday. 6:00-6:50PM
Our Junior Band is for players who have been playing woodwind, brass or percussion instruments for about a year. The standard of playing is usually grade 1-3. You do not need to have taken the exams; just be able to play at this level. If this is the group for you, then come along and meet us!

Family Brass Band
Tuesday. 7:00-8:00PM
This is for brass players of approximately grade 4+. You do not need to have taken the exams; just be able to play at this level. A number of the players are members of the same family – hence the name! Brass players of all ages are welcome and you can come on you own without another member of your family!

Concert Wind Band
Friday. 6:00-8:00PM
This band caters for players who are playing at grade 4 standard or above. For the first part of the evening, woodwind, brass and percussion players have the opportunity to work in separate ensembles to develop their skills. After a social break, everyone comes together to play in the Concert Wind Band. From time-to-time, guest conductors are invited to work with the Band.
