Hopetown Darlington is the region’s award-winning railway heritage visitor attraction!
In 1825, a railway journey changed the world forever. Locomotion No. 1 became the first steam locomotive to haul a passenger-carrying train on a public railway – the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
Discover 200 years of Darlington’s pioneering railway heritage at Hopetown Darlington. First opened in July 2024, Hopetown Darlington is a major redevelopment of the former Head of Steam Railway Museum in Darlington’s Northgate area.
The 7.5 acre visitor attraction encompasses North Road Station Museum, an immersive-experience ride called Experiment!, live engineering at Darlington Locomotive Works, a large events space in the historic Carriage Works, an outdoor railway-themed playpark called Wagon Woods and an exciting series of exhibitions, festivals and events.
Hopetown Darlington celebrates the innovation and experimentation that put Darlington on the map. The story is told through our 30,000 heritage item collection and highly-rated digital features in North Road Station Museum, including selfie stations.
Admission is free, however, some exhibitions, events and activities carry a separate charge. For these, a ticket is required in addition to a free site admission ticket.
