Celebrate the continuing legacy of the Stockton & Darlington Railway at S&DR201, a month-long programme of events, exhibitions, steam experiences and family activities taking place at Hopetown Darlington. Following the success of the S&DR200 bicentenary celebrations, S&DR201 continues the story of the railway that changed the world and honours the innovation, ambition and pioneering spirit that began here in Darlington more than 200 years ago.

Running throughout September, S&DR201 offers visitors an opportunity to explore the remarkable legacy of the world’s first public passenger railway through a packed programme of heritage experiences. From spectacular steam train rides and locomotive displays to family activities, exhibitions and special events, the festival brings railway history to life for all ages.

Highlights include Memory of a Journey: Final Station, a large-scale exhibition featuring thousands of decorated wooden peg dolls created during the S&DR200 celebrations, alongside steam train rides hauled by historic locomotives including Replica Locomotion No.1.

The celebrations culminate in the S&DR201 Steam Festival, a spectacular weekend showcasing the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the steam age. One of the festival’s biggest attractions is the appearance of the world-famous steam locomotive 60163 Tornado, a locomotive built in Darlington and recognised around the world as a symbol of modern railway engineering excellence.
