Step back thousands of years and uncover one of history’s most fascinating stories at Experience Barnsley Museum. Cleopatra and the Queens of Egypt exhibition is now open and invites families to explore 5,000 years of Ancient Egyptian history right in the heart of Barnsley.

Perfect for curious minds of all ages, this exciting exhibition offers plenty for families to enjoy, whether you’re learning something new together or sparking a child’s interest in the past for the very first time.

Curated by Barnsley born, BAFTA winning Egyptologist Professor Joann Fletcher, this one-of-a-kind exhibition brings together many objects and stories for the first time. Discover the lives of 12 inspiring queens and female pharaohs of Egypt, alongside the goddesses they worshipped, and learn how these powerful figures shaped Cleopatra’s story.

Explore Cleopatra’s royal family, daily life and the stories she inspired, from Shakespeare’s famous play to Elizabeth Taylor’s unforgettable film. You can also get up close to some truly extraordinary treasures, including:

  • Stunning ancient jewellery on loan from the British Museum
  • Original memorabilia from the 1963 film Cleopatra, including a signed photograph of Elizabeth Taylor
  • Coins minted by Cleopatra and Mark Antony, discovered in Barnsley’s very own Darfield after being buried for safety almost 1,700 years ago
  • Beautiful artwork by Barnsley-born Egyptologist Harold Jones, alongside Howard Carter’s largest watercolour, showing an Egyptian Queen.

To make your visit even more memorable, the exhibition is supported by a range of family‑friendly activities running throughout the season. Young explorers can take part in the popular Mummies in the Museum trail, designed to spark curiosity, encourage discovery and add an extra layer of fun for children.
