Be that … Winter Winning Champion!

We all know winter comes every year and we should not have to suffer this winter with the cost-of-living crisis we are in! Here’s some top tips to get you winter-ready and have one less worry to deal with this winter. Easy as 1-2-3!

1. Check Your Boiler and Bills

Boiler Bills
Switch your boiler on and test it. The best time to switch your boiler on and check that it’s working is from late September to mid-October. Most people wait for the cold spell to come in to turn the boiler on, but that can be too late if you find that it’s not working then.

  • Check when your boiler last had it’s maintenance service, this should be at least once a year, ideally at the beginning or end of winter.
  • Check your carbon monoxide detector, that the battery is working and it is in the right location.

  • Check your gas and electricity bills, do they look right and are they affordable?
  •  Check what you are paying and if there is anything unusual or incorrect, for example do you have a very cheap rate of electricity at night, yet you never do anything with your electric appliances overnight? If this is the case, that may not be the best tariff for you.
  •  When is your contract due for renewal?
  • Do you have to pay to get out of your contract? At UW, we may be able to help you with that.
  • Are your bills affordable?

2. Do More to Save

  • Book your boiler service
  • Get your boiler serviced. Be sure to use a Safe Gas registered professional.
  • Practise good habits:
    • Set your heating on a timer, that way you don’t waste money heating up an empty house when you’re out all day.
    • Lower your thermostat than you would normally have it.
    • Wear an extra layer, socks and use throw blankets.
    • Keep doors closed to reduce warm air from escaping
    • Allow air circulation by opening windows for short periods throughout the day to dilute carbon monoxide and reduce the risk of respiratory infections.

  • Compare what other suppliers may offer you if you switched. UW offer a ‘UW price promise’ and are so confident everyone will save, if they don’t, UW will double the difference and pay it back.
  • Switch suppliers, if they offer you a better tariff and a guarantee of no mid contract price hikes!
  • Always try to get a fixed rate where possible to give you certainty about what you’re going to pay.
  • Use a smart meter or make sure you submit your meter readings regularly to avoid overpaying
  • Learn how to understand your bill, we are happy to offer you a free bill review, with no obligations!
  •  Look at suppliers like UW who allow you to bundle energy with other services like broadband, mobile or insurance – this can offer you better overall value.
