Fireworks Safety: Illuminating The Fireworks Code For UK Families

As the chill of autumn sets in, we eagerly anticipate one of the season’s most vibrant events – Bonfire Night. There’s something genuinely magical about watching the night sky light up with a dazzling display of fireworks. But with the beauty and excitement comes the responsibility to ensure everyone’s safety while enjoying this spectacular tradition.

In the UK, we have a set of guidelines known as the Fireworks Code. This code, designed to protect us during firework displays, is especially significant for families with young children. Let’s illuminate these guidelines to ensure our Bonfire Night is filled with joy, colour, and above all, safety.

1. Only Adults Should Handle Fireworks

Children may be eager to participate in the festivities, but remember, fireworks are not toys. An adult should be the one to set up, light, and dispose of fireworks. It’s also essential that the person lighting the fireworks wears suitable protective clothing, including gloves and glasses.

2. Plan Your Firework Display

Careful planning can make all the difference. Make sure your display area is free from hazards, away from buildings, trees, and overhead cables. Also, keep a bucket of water or sand handy for putting out small fires and for used fireworks.

3. Read the Instructions

very firework comes with a set of instructions. Read them well in advance, during daylight. If you need to read them at night, use a torch, not a naked flame.

4. Light at Arm’s Length

Use a taper to light fireworks at arm’s length and stand well back once it’s lit. Never return to a firework that has been lit, even if it seems to have gone out.

5. Keep Fireworks in a Closed Box

Store fireworks in a closed box and take them out one at a time. This will reduce the risk of accidental ignition.

6. Never Put Fireworks in Your Pocket

This may seem like common sense, but it’s worth reiterating. Fireworks can ignite unexpectedly and cause severe burns.

7. Keep Pets Indoors

Fireworks can be incredibly stressful for pets. Keep them indoors and create a comfortable, quiet space for them to retreat to during the celebrations.

8. Respect The Law

Remember, it’s illegal to set off fireworks between 11 pm and 7 am, except on Bonfire Night (until midnight), New Year’s Eve, Diwali, and Chinese New Year (until 1 am).By adhering to the Fireworks Code, we can ensure that Bonfire Night remains a fun, memorable, and safe event for the whole family.

So let’s look forward to a night of sparkling skies, toasty bonfires, and the shared joy of family, all in the spirit of safety and respect.Enjoy the fireworks, and most importantly, stay safe!
