Horrible Histories, The Concert Review
I went to watch Horrible Histories, The Concert at The Alexandra in Birmingham tonight with my daughter (Age 9) and my niece (Age 10), and I can safely say… it was a 10 out of 10 from both of them.
From the moment the show started, they were giggling, smiling, singing, dancing and joining in all the way through. It’s one of those rare family shows where children and adults are equally entertained – and equally noisy!
The story sees William Shakespeare tasked with creating the greatest show – but he’s constantly interrupted by outrageous historical icons determined to steal the spotlight.
Queen Elizabeth was very scary* at times – poor Shakespeare was practically quaking in his boots throughout. And at one point, the whole audience had to convince Queen Victoria that there were NO children watching (I didn’t know she hated kids, did you?!).
*Only pretend scary – all ages were laughing (and actively encouraging a be-heading)
The girls’ favourite bit was the peasant stealing Henry VIII’s Labubu dolls and the “end of the show” song being performed far too early by mistake!
The show was full of catchy songs & surprising facts. The live band, led by Horrible Histories musical mastermind Richie Webb, gives it a real concert feel. We absolutely loved the interval song, Mansa Musa’s song, and of course, the big finale number at the very end (right where a finale belongs!).
I was shocked to learn that Henry VIII beheaded 20,000 people — 20,000! The girls loved learning about Mansa Musa – officially the richest person to have ever lived. Lily also got excited seeing Budica, as she is learning about her currently at school.
Big parent win – entertaining and educational! Thank you, Horrible Histories!
Something for fans and first-timers alike: What’s especially lovely is that my daughter – who has never watched Horrible Histories before – loved it just as much as my super-fan niece. It works brilliantly whether you know the TV show inside out or are completely new to it.
Don’t miss it!
The show is only at The Alexandra, Birmingham for one more day — Saturday 21 February.
There are still some tickets available, so if you’re looking to end half term on a high, this is your sign. Book your tickets now (here) and enjoy a brilliantly horrible afternoon or evening out!
