A Day Out at the British Motor Museum – More Than Cars!

I’ll be honest, my daughter isn’t really into cars. But we fancied somewhere new, so off we went to the British Motor Museum… and ended up staying longer than expected!
This summer they’re running a Summer of Senses programme, with different themed activities every day.
We visited on a Fizzing Friday and loved the Science Show, put on by ‘Pickle & Pumpkin Productions‘ – which we really enjoyed – plus we got to make our own car ‘negatives’ and even peek into the fascinating archives room. The Senses Trail kept us all (grown-ups included!) on our toes, and the Beep-Beep, Yeah! exhibition was a fun way to explore the unique sounds, colours and history behind some very special vehicles.
The kids enjoyed seeing the LEGO® car, playing with the giant building bricks, the dress-up areas, and hands-on learning stations. Admittedly, resisting the urge to touch the shiny classics was a challenge for little hands, but these other areas made up for that!
Halfway through, we took our picnic up to the outdoor play area for some fresh air and a run around, before heading back in for a slice of cake from the café (well deserved, obviously).
The Museum is really well set up for families – there are wheelchairs and push-along cars for little ones available from reception, and the friendly welcome there set the tone for the day.
With themed days like Mindful Mondays, Tuneful Tuesdays, Workshop Wednesdays and Tactile Thursdays, plus weekend shows and rallies, there’s a reason to come back again and again – and with an annual pass included in admission, you really can! So even if you’re not a “car person”, give the British Motor Museum a go – you might just find, like we did, that it’s miles more fun than you imagined. (And now my daughter wants our next car to be a Bentley Bentayga!).
