Review- Spitfire Girls at The Rep Birmingham

Spitfire Girls is inspired by the extraordinary true stories of the women who dared to fly during WWII and the incredible bond that tied them together. Funny and heart-warming, this is an untold story of strength, courage and loss. But above all else, hope.

We all know how women hugely contributed to the war efforts by taking on the roles of the men that went to war by working in the factories and working the land but I didn’t know they took to the skies too!

This fantastic play tells the story of two determined sisters that did just that after seeing an advert looking for pilots to distribute cargo across Britain. Bett(Katherine Senior) see’s the notice first and is writing her letter as Dotty(Laura Matthews) walks in and she wants to do it too.  Against all the odds they both get selected, over two thousand women applied for just seventeen positions. They leave behind their work on their family farm much to the dismay of their Dad (Jack Hulland) and head off to do their training. Both of them take to the skies with ease and are proud to do their bit for the war effort despite the negativity from some men and women in the job that they are doing.

This is a must see show that will have you enthralled from the beginning to the end and in total awe of the two sisters and the women of the Blue Skies. The staging was simple but effective because you didn’t need anything to take you away from the outstanding performances from all the actors. Bravo everyone and I’m going to the library to find out more about these brave and courageous women!
