Old Coastguard Station @ Robin Hoods Bay
The National Trust’s visitor centre at the edge of the sea in Robin Hood’s Bay offers hands on models and colourful displays. Find out what makes this part of the North Yorkshire Coast so special, from its distinctive geology and the impact of the elements, to local wildlife and the secret history of smuggling.
Visitors can have fun making waves, generating wind power and finding out more about the natural processes happening every day at Robin Hoods Bay . Come face to face with fascinating creatures in a rockpool tank, spot shore crabs, hermit crabs, blennies, winkles, sea anemones and prawns – all discovered in the rockpools just outside the centre.
Learn about the work National Trust’s Rangers are carrying out in the countryside or find out more about other places to visit locally. Regular events are held throughout the year, including art exhibitions and rockpool safaris. The Old Coastguard Station’s shop has a wide range of gifts, books and National Trust products to browse. National Trust membership can also be purchased, with proceeds contributing to the upkeep of the Old Coastguard Station and the beautiful coastline surrounding it.
Free entry. Open 10am – 4pm winter weekends and February half term, daily 10am – 5pm end of March to beginning of November.
Learning at the Old Coastguard Station: A range of activities is available, from a guided exploration the centre’s exhibition to rockpooling, fossil hunting and a self led village trail. Sessions last from an hour to a full day and can be combined to create a personalised itinerary adjusted to cater for every group's individual needs.
