Malton Museum is based in the Subscription Rooms on Yorkersgate in the heart of the charming market town of Malton. It holds a nationally important collection of artefacts, which are rotated regularly in the museum’s two exhibition rooms. The museum is open Easter to October, Thursday – Saturday 10am – 4pm.Entrance to the museum is free.
Malton Museum’s collection features objects relating to the area’s Roman past as well as items belonging to more recent periods in history, including artefacts connected with horse racing, brewing and other aspects of local life. The collection contains a range of objects many including coins, pottery, weaponry and even a jet bear. These unique snapshots of the area’s past are brought to life with a regular programme of fun, interactive activities for all visitors.
Its current exhibition Malton Goes to Market is a 3 year programme of events, and exhibitions, exploring the history of Malton and Norton and its market heritage. Malton Goes to Market explores the development of a market in this location. Why is there a market here? What was brought and traded here? Who lived here? How much has changed? Drawing on people’s memories, records, photographs and our beautiful objects, Malton Goes to Market tells the story of the life in a market town. The exhibition has something for everyone including our family trails, our costume box and children and various activities.
Family workshops run throughout the school holidays, and include craft and drama sessions for all ages. These year they include a building bridges workshop, various craft activities from puppet making to weaving, a drama session which includes making masks and taking part on our 'tales from the castle' play. The museum also holds events and activities for adults including talks, tours, crafts and hands on sessions with objects from the collection. Please see our website for upcoming event information.'
