Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life, Pickering
A beautiful museum in the small market town of Pickering.
Perfect for visiting when the sun's shining to enjoy the outdoor farm courtyard and riverside picnic area and just as great to spend time exploring our 27 themed rooms during the occasional Yorkshire rain shower.
We have demonstrations and talks from our expert volunteers and can also provide tours for your school or group.
Once poised to be the first agricultural college in England, the fine regency period house and grounds which overlook Pickering's picturesque beck have been home to Beck Isle museum since 1947.
Packed full of exhibitions, objects and stories, the museum gives a taste of life in a rural market town in times gone by. Stop for a game of shove ha'penny in our pub, visit the chemist for a cure to your ills, head to the barbers for a close shave or drop into the blacksmith's for horseshoes and a wish in the well.
Whether you're young, old or somewhere in between, Beck Isle Museum is a great place to visit.

Throughout its unique and unusual history, Beck Isle Museum has been shaped and moulded by the support and generosity of volunteers, visitors, sponsors and donors alike.
We all agree, my 3 boys were entertained for ages and learnt lots. Thank you! - The Howards - York
During its 47 years the museum has welcomed tens of thousands of people through its doors, looking for nostalgic reminders of a time long past, or simply wanting to enjoy the specialist collections entrusted to our care.
Could spend the whole day here - Malcolm and Sheila - Hull
Our role in the community is more important than ever as a place where local people and visitors from far and wide can take a peek at a world we no longer see in our everyday life.
Our Second visit was even better than the first time! - Peggy - Nottingham
To enable us to continue the valuable work we do and to help us celebrate our jubilee we would ask for your help. If you've enjoyed a previous trip to the museum or hope to visit us in the future then please do consider giving your support in one of the following ways, either as an individual, company or organisation.
Naughty but nice Puddings!
Check out our delicious puddings, my favourite is the limoncello trifle, not suitable for the kids, but there are some other scrummy recipes that the whole family can enjoy! Take a look in our pudding section for recipes to make summer BBQ's and eating alfresco all the more tasty! My girls LOVE the chocolate pizza - making it, but mostly eating it!
Over the weekends and holidays there are always times when your children need some chill out time, or to fill an hour or so, or they say the dreaded 5 letter word - BORED! Well, our KidsZone is here to rescue you and them from these moments. Full of puzzles, colouring in sheets and activities from films and programmes there is lots to keep busy!
