There has been a marked increase in obesity rates over the past eight years -
in 1993 13% of men and 16% of women were obese - 2011 this rose to 24% for men and 26% for women (NHS news)
Well it appears that we don't all know!
What should we all be doing?
It's hardly surprising, there is so much information and conflicting advice out there; on the internet and in the media
it's difficult to know where to start!
I KNOW WHERE TO START!
Ask yourself how do you feel about yourself? I mean be brutally honest with yourself.
I am not saying we should all be walking around looking like a Victoria secret model or David Beckham, what I mean is how do you feel in your own skin? Can you walk to the top of your stairs and not be out of breath, if you needed to run to catch the bus or train could you manage it without feeling like your lungs were going to collapse?!
Could you play football or chase your kids about in the park and really enjoy it? If not, there lays your answer, you need to do something about it. Making the most of your life is what it's all about. This is what I am passionate about: leading a fun, full life and enjoying every moment. Live life to the max if it's not fun then we need to change things!
I'M KATHERINE FELGATE, A PERSONAL TRAINER FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS
I have met and helped lots of people achieve their goals - getting fitter and losing weight- both very positive things to do, but the most important part of this never gets talked about. Guess what it is? Its self-worth, confidence and being happy as the person you are!
I often ask clients; why do you need me? A lot of them say I need to lose weight, I am not happy with how I look, I don't like that my clothes don't fit me anymore, etc. etc. I like to ask them why? Why do they feel that way? What difference would it make to you if you were slimmer and fitter and how would it change their lives?
Within these answers lies the motivation. You need motivation to reach your goal! When we know the reason why we are training so hard, changing our habits it's easier to keep focused on that goal makes you more determined to get there. Everyone is different and there is always more to it than I just want to lose weight!
