227e6f274f1a7cfef4605c25fe92cc9a.jpgSTEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is a term you are probably familiar with if you have children in primary school. In recent years there has been a big push on engaging children in these key subjects at a young age in the hope that they will develop an interest in one or more of the disciplines and pursue this into secondary education and beyond.

There is a shortage of these key skills within industry across not just the UK, but the world. Which means that our children have a fantastic range of job prospects available to them, which could lead to a rewarding (and often well paid) career in the future. As the world of STEM continues to develop and grow, so will these opportunities.

The teaching of STEM focuses not on these 4 subjects individually, but offers children the ability to see how each of the disciplines interacts and works with another in the real world.

A good example of this blended learning can be demonstrated by giving a child the task of building a boat strong enough to hold 10 x two pence pieces out of simple household items - paper, foil, paper cups, lollypop sticks, straws and so on. Initially this may appear to be a design and build engineering task, however science comes into play when they consider buoyancy and the suitability of the materials available. Maths is considered in relation to the size and shape of what they want to produce to house the coins.  They then may 323d80c9863115bad8031be1574935a5.jpgchoose to involve technology when they look for inspiration online or take their design to the next level by producing a drawing of what they would like to create on a tablet or computer.

STEM skills prepare our children for the jobs of the future. Take some time to research and understand what those possibilities are now to enable your children to access those opportunities as they progress through their education.
